How big of a trailer should you buy? It depends on many factors, which we discuss below.

Start With Your Tow Vehicle

Look up your tow vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR. This number is the maximum amount of weight that the tow vehicle can safely carry.

Keep this number in mind when shopping for a trailer. You don't want to get too heavy of a trailer and be unable to pack it very full due to the tow vehicle's weight restrictions.

Think About Your Cargo

Some items will require a large trailer. For example, if you are towing an ATV, the trailer will need to be big enough to fit the powersports vehicle. Figure out the dimensions of your intended cargo, which will be a baseline for your trailer's size.

Factor in the Storage Space

When the trailer is not being used, it will need to go somewhere. Ideally, the trailer will be stored indoors. This helps protect the trailer from the sped-up wear caused by poor weather, which in turn extends the trailer's lifespan.

Be sure you know the measurements of the intended storage space, whether it's a garage or shed. You don't want to buy a trailer that's too wide to fit!
