Cargo trailers are perfect for those moving from one residence to another. They boast a huge cargo capacity, and provide the cargo itself with a lot of protection. If you’d like to use your cargo trailer to help move house, check out this list of tips from the experts at Right Trailers.

1. Don’t Overload Your Trailer

The last thing you want to do is overload your cargo trailer. Sure, minimizing the number of trips you need to take will make things more convenient for you. However, overloading your trailer is both dangerous and illegal. In the long run, overburdening the trailer just makes things more difficult. If you’re not sure if you have too much loaded into your cargo trailer, use a truck scale. If you’re not sure where to find one, try a highway weigh station.

2. Keep Cargo Balanced & Secured

Whether you use rope, d-rings, or ratchet straps, securing your cargo is crucial. If your cargo goes unsecured, your belongings may shift about during transit, resulting in greater trailer sway and likely leading to something being broken. Proper weight distribution is also important. Distribute weight evenly from left to right, and try to have 60% of the weight in the front and 40% in the back. Getting the weight distribution exactly right can be a real challenge, so try to make it as even as you can.

3. Drive with Care

Proper driving techniques can go a long way towards making the experience of towing your cargo trailer a safer and easier one. For starters, rapid lane changes should be avoided whenever possible. While you may be in a hurry to get to your destination, sticking to around 10 MPH below the posted speed limit will give you a welcome safety cushion. Don’t forget to increase your following distance as well. Always signal other motorists, and avoid adverse conditions like high winds.
