Buying vs. Renting Trailers for Back to School

Sep. 30 2022 Buying Guide By Right Trailers

It's that time of year again - parents helping their college students head back to school. This transition process inevitably involves moving a large amount of items, from personal knick-knacks to large pieces of furniture. You'll need a trailer, but should you buy or rent one? The following guide helps you decide!

Consider the Cost

A short-term rental will be much more affordable than buying a trailer. If you will only be using the trailer to haul items to the college in the fall and from the college in the spring, it makes sense to rent.

But if you would be renting multiple times throughout the year, the costs start to add up. Eventually, you would actually be saving money in the long run if you bought a trailer.

Consider Your Tow Vehicle

Some tow vehicles are quite limited in the trailers that they can tow. They may not be compatible with certain trailer hitch styles or certain trailer weights. The more restrictive your trailer options are, the harder it can be to find a rental option.

You can save yourself a lot of time and stress by buying a trailer. You will only need to research the compatibility one time, rather than every time you visit the dealership for a rental.

Consider the Convenience

It's tough to put a price tag on convenience! When you buy a trailer, you get 24/7 access to it. Anytime you need to use the trailer, it will be there. You won't need to go through the hassle of visiting a trailer dealership and hoping there is an available trailer rental to meet your needs.

The move-in process for college students can be stressful enough - make it easier by buying a trailer and having it ready to go far in advance!
