The right cargo trailer can be a huge help to your personal or professional life. Ask yourself the following questions to help identify what you'll need from your investment and make it easier to find that perfect match!

Which Trailer Hitch Style Would Work Best?

Cargo trailers will use either a bumper pull or gooseneck hitch. Both styles offer some unique perks.

Bumper pull hitches are designed where the hitch sticks out behind the tow vehicle. This creates a gap between the tow vehicle and the cargo trailer.

The advantages of the bumper pull hitch is that it will be compatible with a wider range of tow vehicles as well as being more affordable.

Gooseneck hitches are designed where the hitch gets installed directly into the bed of a truck. This inevitably limits tow vehicle options to trucks, of course.

The advantages of the gooseneck hitch is that it leads to an overlap between the cargo trailer and the tow vehicle, which leads to better control and stability on the road.

What Is My Tow Vehicle's Weight Limitation?

All tow vehicles have a limit on how much weight they can carry. Look up your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which will give you the maximum weight it can safely tow. The total weight of the cargo trailer, the hitch, and the cargo will need to be less than this number.

What Am I Hauling?

Different types of cargo will have different space requirements. If you're hauling an ATV, for example, the cargo trailer needs to be at least as long and wide as that powersports vehicle (with a little wiggle room added). If you are hauling multiple small items that can be stacked, there can be ways to plan the cargo layout in order to fit inside a cargo trailer that isn't wide or long but is tall.
